The BD Vacutainer Safety-Lok Blood Collection Set with Pre-Attached Holder is a sterile, single-use venous blood collection device designed to support safe and efficient blood sampling.
This 23G presentation combines a fine 23G × 3/4 inch blood collection needle, 12-inch flexible tubing and a pre-attached BD Vacutainer tube holder in one complete ready-to-use system. The integrated Safety-Lok forward-shielding mechanism is designed to cover the needle following venepuncture, helping reduce the risk of accidental needlestick injury. This pack contains 25 individually sterile sets.

Always refer to the current BD instructions for use, individual packaging and local blood collection protocols before use, and check the sterility status and expiry date on the set supplied.
The BD Vacutainer Safety-Lok set is a safety-engineered device for venous blood collection by appropriately trained healthcare professionals. Each set provides an integrated system incorporating a 23G winged blood collection needle, flexible tubing, a multi-sample connection, a pre-attached Vacutainer tube holder and a forward-shielding safety mechanism. The pre-assembled format removes the need to manually connect a separate tube holder before use and provides a convenient ready-to-use blood collection system.
The Safety-Lok mechanism is designed to help reduce the risk of needlestick injury following blood collection. After the needle has been removed from the patient, the protective shield is moved forward over the needle; once correctly activated, the shield provides protection against accidental contact with the used needle. The safety feature should be activated immediately after venepuncture and before the device is discarded, and practitioners should familiarise themselves with the manufacturer’s instructions before first use.
Each set contains a 23G × 3/4 inch winged needle. A 23G needle provides a relatively fine diameter and may be selected for venous access where this gauge suits the patient’s vein and the required procedure. Needle selection should take into account patient age, vein size and condition, required blood volume, number of samples, laboratory requirements, risk of haemolysis and clinical judgement — the smallest available gauge should not automatically be selected, as excessively small gauges may affect blood flow or specimen quality for some tests.
The 12-inch flexible tubing provides separation between the venepuncture site and the tube holder, which can help reduce unnecessary needle movement during collection and provide flexibility when collecting multiple tubes. Flexible tubing can be particularly useful where veins are small or difficult to access, multiple tubes are required, patient positioning is restricted, movement at the venepuncture site should be minimised, or the practitioner requires additional freedom when changing tubes.
The tube holder is already attached, eliminating the need to manually connect a separate holder before venepuncture. The pre-attached design can help reduce preparation steps and component handling, provide a complete ready-to-use system, reduce the risk of incorrect assembly, and maintain a one-holder-per-device approach. The complete set, including its pre-attached holder, is single use. The holder is designed for use with compatible evacuated blood collection tubes — different Vacutainer tubes contain different additives for different investigations, so healthcare professionals should select the appropriate tube according to the laboratory test requested, specimen type, tube additive, required volume, local laboratory policy, order of draw and manufacturer instructions. Incorrect tube selection or specimen handling may affect laboratory results.
The BD Vacutainer Safety-Lok set should be used by appropriately trained healthcare professionals competent in venepuncture, who understand patient identification, blood test requirements, vein selection, venepuncture technique, infection prevention, tube selection, order of draw, specimen labelling and handling, needlestick prevention, sharps disposal and management of exposure incidents. Local venepuncture and laboratory policies should always be followed.
Before use, confirm the patient’s identity and required tests, select the correct tubes, check the packaging is sealed and undamaged, check the expiry date, confirm the 23G needle is appropriate, inspect the device for damage, ensure an appropriate sharps container is available, perform hand hygiene and prepare the venepuncture site according to local procedures. Do not use if the sterile packaging is damaged, opened or contaminated. Throughout, follow infection-prevention procedures — hand hygiene, appropriate PPE where required, correct site preparation, avoiding touching the sterile needle, maintaining needle sterility until insertion, and using a new sterile set for every patient.
Where multiple samples are required, tubes should be collected according to the appropriate order of draw to reduce additive carryover. Correct collection also includes filling tubes to the appropriate volume, mixing additive-containing tubes where required, avoiding excessive shaking, correct labelling, appropriate transport and correct storage before analysis. Because the flexible tubing contains a small volume of air, when drawing coagulation samples as the first specimen a discard tube may be required in some circumstances to ensure the citrate tube reaches the correct fill volume; blood culture procedures may also have specific requirements, so always follow the receiving laboratory’s protocol for specialist samples. To help minimise haemolysis — which can affect many tests — select an appropriate vein and needle gauge, allow alcohol to dry before insertion, avoid excessive probing and tourniquet time, allow evacuated tubes to fill naturally, mix tubes gently where required and handle samples appropriately after collection.
After completing collection, remove the needle from the vein using an appropriate technique, apply suitable pressure to the site, then activate the Safety-Lok mechanism immediately — moving the shield forward per the manufacturer’s instructions and confirming the used needle is shielded — before placing the complete device directly into an appropriate sharps container. The mechanism should not be activated while the needle remains within the vein unless specifically instructed by the manufacturer. The complete used set must be disposed of immediately in an approved sharps container; do not reuse the device, separate the holder for reuse, remove, break or bend the needle, leave the used device unattended or place it into normal clinical or household waste. Sharps containers should be available close to the point of use and never overfilled.
The set is a single-use device — the entire device (needle, tubing, connector, pre-attached holder and safety mechanism) should be discarded after one procedure, and never reused between patients, as reuse may increase the risk of cross-contamination, blood-borne infection, device malfunction, loss of sterility, needle damage or patient injury. Blood samples should be labelled according to local policy and laboratory requirements, with required identifiers verified before samples are sent for analysis; never pre-label tubes unless permitted by local procedures. Store unused sets in their original sterile packaging in a clean, dry environment, protected from excessive heat, moisture, direct sunlight and physical damage, and secure from unauthorised access. Each device is sterilised by gamma irradiation and sterility is maintained while the packaging remains intact — do not use if the packaging has been opened, torn or the seal compromised, if the device appears damaged or if the product has passed its expiry date.

BD Vacutainer Safety-Lok Blood Collection Sets with Pre-Attached Holder x 25 are sterile, single-use medical devices intended for venous blood collection by appropriately trained healthcare professionals. Users remain responsible for ensuring the device is appropriate for the patient, the correct needle gauge and blood collection tubes are used, the appropriate order of draw and venepuncture technique are followed, specimens are correctly labelled and handled, the Safety-Lok mechanism is correctly activated, the device is used once only and the entire device is disposed of safely.
