Introduction:
Wisdom teeth removal, also known as third molar extraction, is a routine dental procedure aimed at preventing or addressing oral health issues caused by impacted or misaligned wisdom teeth. Proper aftercare is vital in promoting optimal healing, reducing discomfort, and preventing complications such as dry socket or infection.
Immediate Aftercare (First 48 Hours):
Upon completion of the surgery, it's typical to experience swelling, pain, and light bleeding. Patients should bite gently on the gauze pad placed by the dentist to reduce bleeding and allow a clot to form in the tooth socket. Replace gauze as needed. To manage pain and inflammation, take prescribed painkillers as directed and apply a cold pack to the affected area in 15-minute intervals. Avoid rinsing, spitting forcefully, or drinking from a straw for the first 24 hours. Soft foods like yoghurt, pudding, and soup are recommended, and hot, spicy, or crunchy foods should be avoided. Additionally, abstain from smoking as it can hinder the healing process.
Continued Care & Monitoring (After 48 Hours):
After the initial 48-hour period, gentle saltwater rinses can be performed several times a day, especially after meals, to flush out particles of food and debris. Maintain oral hygiene by gently brushing the teeth without disturbing the surgical sites. If stitches were placed, they'll either dissolve or need removal by your dentist in a subsequent visit. Gradually reintroduce more solid foods as comfort permits. Any unusual symptoms like prolonged pain, swelling, bad taste, fever, or difficulty opening the mouth should be promptly reported to your dentist.
