In the coming months, there is a new weight loss kid on the block, from the makers of Ozempic and Saxanda, they have launched Wegovy. Wegovy is dedicated to weight loss management, unlike the other products that have been used for weight loss but are aimed at diabetes. Wegovy is solely for use in helping you lose weight through a weekly injection!
In June 2021, saw the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a new weight loss medication called Wegovy (semaglutide). Wegovy is taken once a week through an injectable that is used alongside a healthy diet and exercise. Yes, you still need to exercise!
Wegovy is designed to help users lose weight by trigging signals to the brain making you feel like you are full and not as hungry.
How does Wegovy work?
Wegovy works by mimicking the action of a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) – very scientific! which then helps reduce your appetite and increase feelings of fullness. It works by activating specific receptors in the brain that control hunger and satiety, reducing food intake and resulting in potential weight loss.
What are the benefits of Wegovy?
Studies are showing that Wegovy can help people lose significant amounts of weight. In one study, individuals who took Wegovy lost an average of 15% of their body weight, compared to only 2.4% for those who took a placebo.
In addition to weight loss, users of Wegovy have been shown to improve other areas of their health, such as reducing blood pressure and improving blood sugar control in people with type 2 diabetes.
What are the side effects of Wegovy?
As with any medication, Wegovy can cause side effects. The most common side effects reported in clinical trials were nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and constipation. These side effects go over time as your body starts getting used to the weekly injections, but some people are advised to stop taking Wegovy if the symptoms persist.
Wegovy can also cause an increase in heart rate, which may be a concern for people with heart disease or a history of heart attack or stroke so it’s best not to take it if you have a heart condition.
Who can take Wegovy?
Wegovy is approved for use in adults over the age of 18 with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater, or those with a BMI of 27 or greater who have at least one weight-related health condition, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol.
It is not recommended for use in pregnant or breastfeeding women or those with a history of pancreatitis or thyroid cancer.
Should I start taking Wegovy?
If you have always had a problem with your weight and have a BMI of 30 or greater, or a BMI of 27 or greater with at least one weight-related health condition, Wegovy may be a good option for you.
However, it is essential to talk to your healthcare practitioner and get a consultation about Wegovy before taking it.
Wegovy has started to become hugely successful in the US with many celebrities such as Elon Musk starting to use it and seeing results. In the UK it is meant to launch in April 2023 – however, there could be setbacks, due to stock levels. However, we believe once it does launch in the UK, it’s going to be just as successful as in the US. You’ll be able to find Wegovy for sale on the Faces Consent app very soon!
